The next evolution of planning is built around the moment of choice

Ebonie Newman, Head of Client Advisory

Retail Media’s strategic potential is becoming clearer, but planning hasn’t caught up, leaving growth on the table.

For decades, media planning has succumbed to a familiar divide. On one side sits brand, the realm of emotional storytelling and long-term equity. On the other sits performance, the world of conversion and immediate transactions. Marketers, of course, juggle both every day. The real issue isn’t a lack of intent; it’s the complexity of integration. Retail Media and brand strategy can’t operate on independent tracks disconnected from how real customers actually navigate their lives. By treating these channels as isolated silos rather than a unified ecosystem, we create disjointed experiences for the consumer and leave massive growth on the table.

But the paradigm has shifted. We know Retail Media is no longer just a performance lever, it is the unique environment where mental and physical availability are activated simultaneously. When we influence the critical moment of brand choice, we drive growth that is both immediate and enduring.

It’s time to rethink how we plan in favour of a unified customer experience

As the role of media in shaping customer choice evolves, maintaining this artificial divide becomes a barrier to growth. What has surprised me most in moving into this space is how often trade plans are built in isolation of marketing plans. This siloed approach fails to capture the true potential of modern commerce and places Retail Media as solely a point of transaction platform. Instead, we must treat it as a continuous canvas where brand influence and customer action meet, a powerful vehicle that connects inspiration to action across the entire customer journey.

To do that, we need brand and trade teams, alongside agencies working together on a shared opportunity, customer objective, creative idea and measurement approach because after all, Retail is where a brand's distinctive assets can play a key role as brand and trade converge.

It’s time to design from the inside out

The moment of choice is where brands win or lose. It is the exact point where a product is either selected or ignored, trade-offs are made, and all prior brand investment is truly tested. Retail insight, born in the retail ecosystem, allows us to understand the context of these customer decisions, the specific needs and occasions driving the shop, and how exposure directly links to purchase. By anchoring our plans in this moment of choice, we move beyond simply who we are targeting or where we can reach them, to deeply understanding what they are trying to achieve.

At its core, this is about unlocking a deeper truth: retailers intimately understand the needs and occasions driving customer decisions. When brands leverage this insight, they can design Retail Media plans to do more than just show up at the shelf and instead solve a customer's needs in the right moment. This is about being present in the moment of choice, understanding why the customer is there and showcase why they should choose your brand.

Effective media needs to start and end with the customer

The customer is at the heart of it all in Retail. When customers are thinking about an event to plan and share with their friends, we’re helping them prepare for a food occasion. When a busy parent is thinking about what to cook for dinner, we’re helping them craft their Wednesday night routine while they’re thinking about the show they’ll watch with dinner that night. These are occasions that customers are planning for, and together, we have a role to help meet these moments with purpose.

The supermarket is no longer a place to tick off a grocery list. It’s a stage for exploration and discovery. The future of Retail Media enables this by shifting from a pure performance touchpoint to a premium canvas that brings your brand to life at the ultimate moment of influence.

To succeed, we must stop treating brand and performance as a trade-off. Instead, we need to unify them through strategic planning as a single engine for long-term customer growth. Brand, trade, agency and Retail Media collaborating on shared objectives that start and end with the customer.

Because when we deliver what's best for the customer, we win, together.
